Victorinus was one of the top generals in the Gallic empire. Upon the death of Marius he was proclaimed emperor although he may have rebelled against his predecessor. His reign was troubled with rebellions resulting in the secession of various territories some of which were fomented by the Roman emperors Claudius Gothicus and Aurelian. Although considered to be a competent ruler his predilection for the wives of some of his officers resulted in his downfall when an enraged husband had Victorinus murdered in Cologne in AD 271.
The coinage of Victorinus, which included an issue of gold quinarius, is mostly of good quality and was mostly issued from Cologne and Trier.
