‘My father was a coin dealer and during a sort out after he died I found an assorted number of coins. Despite having no knowledge of coins and their worth I was able to discover after an internet search that some likely had some value. I decided to visit three coin dealers in order to get an initial impression of the worth of the coins I had. After a cursory examination the first two dealers were quite dismissive and both said that the coins were not worth much and I was left with the impression that they were taking advantage of my lack of knowledge. My meeting with John Philpotts of Silbury Coins was completely different. He took the time to discuss the merits (or not) of each coin and its likely fair value. It was an education in a numastmatists professionalism. He was extremely knowledgeable and took time to explain the various facets in valuing a coin carefully and clearly. I sold my coins to him with a clear feeling that I had been given a very fair price. I cannot recommend John highly enough to anyone looking to sell, or looking to build a collection of coins.
