The twenty bronze coins in this collection come from the third and fourth centuries AD and record the transformation of the Roman Empire into a Christian theocracy and the beginning of its long fall. The obverses show the portrait of the reigning Emperor- sometimes his only surviving likeness – while inevitably, because the sheer size of the Empire required constant defence against Barbarian tribes, most of the reverses are devoted to military conquests.
