Vetranio was an experienced Roman officer and statesman, originating from Moesia (Serbia). Initially accepted by the emperor Constantius II, he challenged the usurper Magnentius, but later allied with him in a bid to authenticate his title. After Constantius’ troops acclaimed him as emperor in the presence of Vetranio, he had to stand down and was retired into exile.

Including a portrait coin of the rare Mercian king Berhtwulf, well known Alfred the Great of Wessex, Cnut from the Anglo Viking kingdom of York and Harold I ‘Harefoot’, named due to his reputed speed in battle! Mints represented include Chester, Oxford, Hastings, Lewes, Dover, York and Wallingford. Most coins have his handwritten label and sometimes others, see individual listings for details.

The Professor Jeffery P. Mass collection of short cross pennies is perhaps the best known name and collection in this corner of numismatics, a Anglo American gentleman who was always willing to share his extensive knowledge of the subject and with virtually unrivalled academic abilities. In his fifteen years of collecting short cross pennies he accumulated not the largest, but arguably the most comprehensive representation of the series. This was recognised by the decision to make his collection the subject of a volume in the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles series, an acknowledgement of its importance. Like Jeffrey North before him, Jeffrey Mass undertook the authorship of his own collection.
