Quintillus was the younger brother of Claudius Gothicus. He was in command of troops in Northern Italy when Claudius died of the plague in the summer of AD 270. Although The accession of Quintillus was confirmed by the Senate Aurelian had also been proclaimed emperor by his troops who were in the Balkans. Aurelian commanded forces which were far superior to those of Quintillus. As a result many of the troops under Quintillus deserted and after a reign of less than 3 months Quintillus committed suicide.
The coinage of Quintillus closely resembles that of Claudius Gothicus.
