Pupienus was also born during the reign of Marcus Aurelius. He twice held the consulship prior to his elevation as co emperor. As Pupienus had more military experience he took charge of the military however he was spared battle when Maximinus was murdered during the siege of Aquileia. Unfortunately the 2 co emperors did not get on and after a few months both were murdered by the Praetorian guard.
The coinage of Balbinus and Pupienus is scarce and for the last time in the history of the imperial currency all was produced in Rome. The most notable numismatic event was the re introduction of the antoninianus. This time inflationary pressures quickly drove the denarius out of circulation thus ending a denomination that had been a mainstay of the currency for over 400 years.
