Today’s upload contains a broad range of English Medieval coinage starting with a Sceatta dating to the 7th Century AD and ending with a silver crown of Queen Anne, this historically important coin bears the letters VIGO below her bust, marking that it was made from silver bullion captured from the Spanish in Vigo bay, a signification British naval victory.
Between these coins we see a penny of queen Cynethryth, wife of king Offa (AD 757-796), also historically important as this was the first time an English monarch struck coinage for their wife.
Next up a run of late Anglo-Saxon pennies from mints such as Colchester & Cambridge, followed by a Norman coins of William II Rufus, killed in a ‘hunting accident’ in the New Forest which was most convenient for his successor and an unusual provincial coin of king Stephen struck during the first English Civil War.
Gold and silver coinage of Henry IV is included (not often we can say that as both are rare) and a lovely half noble of Edward III, who introduced gold back in to Britain’s coinage after being absent for hundreds of years.
Enjoy browsing and if you’re in Europe, keep cool!

Our latest upload comprises a diverse offering from the Ancient British series. Some call them Iron Age coins, some Celtic, but whatever you call them, there's no denying their beauty!
These miniature masterpieces were struck 2,000 years ago by people who lived in mud huts. Not only that, but they then managed to survive buried in the ground for 2,000 years before being rediscovered, allowing us to admire them today.
What an awesome journey and tangible link to history.
