Didius Julianus was born around AD 133 to a wealth family in Milan. Brought up in the household of Domita Lucilla, the mother of Marcus Aurelius. He held the consulship in the same year as Pertinax AD 175.
When Pertinax was murdered the Praetorian Guard put the throne up for auction. Julianus won by offering to pay each soldier of the guard 25,000 Sestertius. Having secured the throne this sum was never paid. Not surprisingly this aroused such disgust that Julianus was also assassinated 2 months later.
