Born in around AD 215 Claudius was a native of Upper Moesia who enjoyed a military career where he rose to a position of high command. When Gallienus was assassinated in AD 268 substantial bribed to the disgruntled troops resulted in Claudius being elevated to Augustus. Claudius then achieved a major victory over the Goths at Naissus in the Balkans earning him the title Gothicus.
Many of the defeated Goths then defected joining Claudius however they brought the plague with them claimed the life of Claudius at Sirmium in AD 270. In spite of having a short reign Claudius achievements led to him being deified and he was even claimed to be an ancestor by Constantine the Great.
Although his gold coins are mostly of reasonable quality the billon coinage was of poor quality and contained negligible amounts of silver.
