Roman Bronze Statue of Mercury 1st/2nd Century AD
55x32mm, 23.00g

Mercury is a major god in Roman religion and mythology, that of commerce, travellers, communication, boundaries and other disciplines. He was considered the son of Maia, the daughter of the Titan Atlas, and Jupiter in Roman mythology. He also has a role as a bridge between the upper and lower worlds. In his earliest forms, he appears to have been related to the Greek god Hermes. His attributes include caduceus, winged sandals and helmet, cockerel, purse (as with this example).

A wonderful antiquity in excellent condition.
Provenance will be provided (found in a town in North West England).
