Nero (54-68AD) Gold Aureus struck in Rome, 65-66AD. Reverse showing the temple of Janus.
The Temple of Janus, built c.260BC, stood in the Roman Forum. It had doors on both ends, within was a statue of Janus, the two-faced god of beginnings and endings, associated with time. The temple doors were known as the “Gates of Janus” and were closed in times of peace and opened in times of war.
An exceptional example with mint lustre.
