An exceptional coin, large flan, imposing, realistic portrait and struck on wonderful metal with even, dark tone with hints of reddish brown soil staining.

Coenwulf was king of Mercia, succeeding Offa’s son Ecgfrith. He was descended from the 7th century king Penda of Mercia. During his reign he had to actively re-gain the kingdoms of East Anglia and Kent.
