Kings of Mercia Coenwulf Silver Penny 796-821AD Canterbury

20mm, 1.38g

An attractive mid Saxon penny, wonderful design and a bold portrait makes this a very appealing coin.

Coenwulf was king of Mercia, succeeding Offa’s son Ecgfrith. He was descended from the 7th century king Penda of Mercia. During his reign he had to actively re-gain the kingdoms of East Anglia and Kent.

Recorded with the Early Medieval Coinage database at the Fitzwilliam museum, reference number will be supplied.
