Kings of Mercia Burgred Silver Penny 852-874AD ex Lockett coll.
19mm, 1.34g
A pleasing example with a well respected collectors provenance, a small perforation at 6 o’clock on the obverse but coin is stable. Attractive, even dark tone consistent with being from an old collection.

During his reign, Burgred of Mercia allied with Aethelwulf of Wessex to subdue the North Welsh, subsequently marrying his daughter Aethelswith. He later requested assistance from Aethelred I and Alfred against the Danes who remained and overwintered in London in 872AD, driving Burgred from his kingdom in 874AD, after which he retired to Rome.

This coin comes with an old collectors ticket and is originally from the famous Lockett collection.
