Kings of England Aethelstan Silver Penny 924-939AD Liofhelm, London mint

22mm, 1.63g, S1093

Obverse legend – AEDELSTAN REX TOT BRIT (Aethelstan, king of all England)

Reverse Legend – + LIOFHELM MO LVND CIVITT (Liofhelm, moneyer at London)

A wonderful coin of Aethelstan, hard to find as many coins from this period are chipped. This coin is made of good metal and most attractive in hand.

The eldest son of Edward the Elder, he succeeded in the re-conquest of Danish controlled territory with the capture of York in 927AD. He introduced the coinage law at Grately which stated that there should be one coinage throughout the kings land and no minting except in a port; it also outlined the quota of moneyers for each borough.

Provenance and past ticket will be provided.
