Kings of England Aethelstan Silver Penny 924-939AD Crowned bust type Amelric, Winchester mint

21mm, 1.47g, S1095

A wonderful portrait of Aethelstan, hard to find as most coins are struck using worn/damaged dies. Some minor surface cracking in the legends above the portrait but coin is stable and most attractive in hand.

The eldest son of Edward the Elder, he succeeded in the re-conquest of Danish controlled territory with the capture of York in 927AD. He introduced the coinage law at Grately which stated that there should be one coinage throughout the kings land and no minting except in a port; it also outlined the quota of moneyers for each borough.

Provenance and past ticket will be provided.
