Comments

Evans: XV.8 (1864, p. 386, pl. XV).

Allen Type: British IXb.

Van Arsdell Classification: Icenian N, Coins Inscribed AESV.

Talbot Aesv. Struck at Mint C, which was a small mint in the east of the region. The mint’s output is characterised by the horse’s Y-shaped head crossed by an elongated pellet, and later two lines of three pellets on its chest. Saenv, Aesv and Ece B are die-linked with Saenv coming first and Ece B ending last. The Ece stater may also belong to this issue. The body of the horse may have been made with a punch, making it very similar across issues.

Talbot Chronology: Gallo-Belgic E/Ingoldisthorpe – Early Local Period I (55BC-35BC) – Early Local Period II (35BC-15BC) – Denominational Period I (15BC-5: Snettisham – Plouviez – Irstead – Early Boar Horse) – Denominational Period II (5-25: Boar Horse B – Boar Horse C) – Denominational Period III (25-45).

AESV

Like those of ‘SAENV’, the pattern-horse issues of ‘AESV’ are rarer by comparison to those of ‘ECEN’ and ‘ANTED’. Once again, ABC advances the possibility that this individual was a local person of importance, although this is entirely speculative. The issues of ‘AESV’ fit chronologically with the other issues of Talbot’s extensive ‘pattern-horse’ coinage, struck during the early decades of the 1st century AD.
