Gallo Belgic Ambiani Gold Broad Flan Stater, Circa 150BC. Rare

Flamboyant wreathed bust right with big hair/Horse right with charioteer above.

20x21mm, 7.07g, S 1, ABC 1

The reference numbers above say it all, this is an example of the first coin used in Britain, circa 150BC and imported from Gaul, this is where it all began. The obverse shows a well styled head of Apollo (the Sun god) facing right, the reverse shows a horse right, charioteer above, wheel symbol behind. This series was copied from earlier Greek coins bearing a similar design and is the foundation for the British Iron Age Coinage which follows.
