Reverse

Triple-tailed horse right, tail has three strands with pellets, elliptical ear spread open at top. Six-spoked wheel below. Crescent above. ANTED inscription above (NTE ligate).

Anted (c. AD 20–43?)

Onomastic (name-study) approaches suggest that abbreviation ‘Anted’ seems likely to represent an abbreviated version of the name Antedios – he who is ‘very fiery’ or ‘sits foremost’, in the Brythonic tongue. An ‘Anted’ also struck coins in East Anglia, though this is evidently a different individual. Just as with his co-issuers Corio, Catti and Comux, Anted struck gold staters – though these differ in the key respect that they often bear the additional abbreviations ‘RIC’, ‘RIGV’ or ‘RICOV’ after his name (ABC 2066/BMC 3023–27). This is often interpreted as a shortened version of the word rigonos – usually translated as ‘king’. Notably, in addition to gold staters, Anted also struck silver units (ABC 2072, BMC 3032–38). The smaller flan on these coins necessitates breaking up of the name into two sections (AN-TED), with one located above the reverse horse and the other between its legs.
