Cnut was a Dane, the son of Sweyn Forkbeard and was king of England, Denmark and Norway, having won the throne of England from Edmund II (Ironside) after centuries of Viking raids.
Three main types of coins were struck during the reign of Cnut, the quatrefoil , pointed helmet and short cross (this coin being an example), each type having regional variations even from the same mint and moneyer.

In his fifteen years of collecting short cross pennies he accumulated not the largest, but arguably the most comprehensive representation of the series. This was recognised by the decision to make his collection the subject of a volume in the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles series, an acknowledgement of its importance. Like Jeffrey North before him, Jeffrey Mass undertook the authorship of his own collection.
