Corn ear (barley) without central stalk and four elongated asymmetrical grain pairs. Inscription (CAM CVN) either side.

Horse rearing right, spiky mane. Branch above. Inscription (AGR) below on exergual line.

Sills DK 581 (1 obverse, 1 reverse die): North Thames Coinage; Type: Cunobelinus; Quarter Staters: Class 3d – AGR. Sills places Agr’s coinage within Cunobelin’s. Shares the obverse die with the A type (ABC 2999).

Sills chronology: Gallo-Belgic Ca – British G (Early Clacton) / Aa Westerham – British La (Whaddon Chase) – British Lb (Westbury) – Addedomaros – Dubnovellaunos – Tasciovanos – Cunobelinus (Biga – Linear – Wild – Plastic – Classic).

The meaning of Agr is unknown. It may be an abbreviation of a relative or associate of Cunobelin, who ruled alongside him in the latter part of his reign or just afterwards. Chris Rudd suggests Agr might be short for Agricu ‘war dog’ or Agrippa ‘griffin’. Agr coins have been found mostly in Essex and Suffolk.
