Carausius Silver Denarius 286-293AD London mint, Temple, UNIQUE

19x20mm, 3.74g

IMP CARAVSIVS P AVG, Laureate draped and cuirassed bust right. rev. ROMAE AETERNAE V, Hexastyle temple of Roma with seated cult figure inside, SRS in exergue (cf. Shiel 83; cf RIC 578; cf. RCV 94)

Good very fine and well centred. Unique.

A rare opportunity to own a truly magnificent coin from the ancient series, this is both extremely rare and in high grade.

The enigmatic ‘SRS’ mintmark is know known from three different dies which suggests that it was not an engravers error but deliberate. What did it mean? Perhaps future discoveries will clarify further, time will tell. Exciting front line history unfolding before us.
