Arcadius, Hispanic in origin, was Roman Emperor in the east from 395 to 408AD. He was the eldest son of Theodosius I and Aelia Flaccilla, and brother of the emperor Honorius, who ruled the western empire. His ministers and wife, Aelia Eudoxia, had much political influence during his reign.

This was recognised by the decision to make his collection the subject of a volume in the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles series, an acknowledgement of its importance. Like Jeffrey North before him, Jeffrey Mass undertook the authorship of his own collection.
