Anglo- Viking Danish East Anglia St. Edmund memorial coinage Circa 895-918AD Silver Penny

18mm, 1.19g

A most pleasing example struck in good metal and with little wear, attractive toning. Obverse legend retrograde.

Edmund is considered to have originated from East Anglia, though little is known about him. He was killed in c.870AD for refusing to renounce Christ, following ongoing hostilities after a combined invasion by Norse warriors. He became venerated as a saint and a martyr, and his shrine made Bury St Edmunds a significant place of pilgrimage. The memorial coinage was issued around the time East Anglia was absorbed into Wessex by Edward the Elder.

Provenance will be provided, last sold by auction in 1997.
