23mm, 1.45g
The obverse shows the legend ‘AETHELSTAN REX TO BRT’ translating to ‘Aethelstan king of all Britain’.

The moneyers name is PAUL with ES added to the end which is commonplace with moneyers working in the Midlands & North Western mints during this period.

Clear legends, struck on a full flan and nicely toned. This coin comes with an old collectors ticket.

Background to Aethelstan
The eldest son of Edward the Elder, Aethelstan succeeded in the re-conquest of Danish controlled territory with the capture of York in 927AD. He introduced the coinage law at Grately which stated that there should be one coinage throughout the kings land and no minting except in a port; it also outlined the quota of moneyers for each borough.
