The Vine Leaf Hoard

Here at Silbury Coins we are very pleased to be able to offer for sale a selection of gold staters from the Vine leaf hoard, an important treasure find unearthed by metal detectorists whilst searching in Hampshire. Each coin sold will be accompanied with a booklet providing a detailed history behind the coins and find itself. The opportunity to acquire coins from such an important find is rarely given to private collectors with most coin hoards being retained by museums. Introducing the St Austell collection of Anglo Saxon, Norman and Plantagenet silver pennies. Formed in the 1990’s-2000’s by a collector in Cornwall, England.

Including a portrait coin of the rare Mercian king Berhtwulf, well known Alfred the Great of Wessex, Cnut from the Anglo Viking kingdom of York and Harold I ‘Harefoot’, named due to his reputed speed in battle! The Professor Jeffery P. Mass collection of short cross pennies is perhaps the best known name and collection in this corner of numismatics, a Anglo American gentleman who was always willing to share his extensive knowledge of the subject and with virtually unrivalled academic abilities. In his fifteen years of collecting short cross pennies he accumulated not the largest, but arguably the most comprehensive representation of the series. This was recognised by the decision to make his collection the subject of a volume in the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles series, an acknowledgement of its importance. Like Jeffrey North before him, Jeffrey Mass undertook the authorship of his own collection.
