Spring 2026 Newsletter

As the days lengthen and spring begins to unfold, we are pleased to welcome you to our Spring 2026 Newsletter.

This season of renewal is the perfect moment to celebrate the stories our coins preserve. In this issue, we highlight a rare silver penny of Anlaf Sihtricsson, struck during his first reign over Viking Northumbria (AD 941–944). We are also proud to present the Cambridge Collection of Ancient Greek Coinage, an exceptional collection formed over four decades and now released piece by piece for a new generation of collectors. Alongside these features, we explore the Heytesbury Hoard from the English Civil War and a remarkable recent Iron Age discovery — reminders that history continues to emerge in exciting ways. We hope this spring edition inspires your collecting journey.

The Team at Silbury Coins

Cambridge Collection of Ancient Greek Coinage

Silbury Coins is delighted to have been selected to offer the Cambridge Collection of Ancient Greek Coinage — an extraordinary collection assembled over more than forty years by a dedicated English couple united by their passion for classical history.

They carefully collected as many known types as were available, spending hours labelling each coin and fitting it into their collection. The kingdom of Ancient Greece is not easy to understand but illustrated with these wonderful coins a map emerges and being so beautiful in their design, they are a pleasure to handle.

As with all great collections, the time eventually comes for it to be passed on. The collectors have chosen to release each coin individually, giving a new generation of enthusiasts the opportunity to acquire carefully selected pieces and continue the story within their own collections.

Coins from the collection are now available exclusively on our website.

The Carnyx: Iron Age Britain’s Trumpet of War

Introducing the Carnyx, an Iron Age war trumpet designed to instil terror.

A fabulous hoard of metalwork dating to the Iron Age was uncovered in Norfolk at the beginning of the year, this exciting find contained a superb, undamaged example of a Carnyx and a Boar standard, both iconic symbols from Iron Age Britain.

The Carnyx, a tall bronze war trumpet with an animalshaped bell, was held aloft above warriors in battle and used by Celtic tribes between to motivate their own forces and intimidate their foes.

The Carnyx is shown on several Late Iron Age coins, here we see it on a gold stater of Tasciovanus (LC576) which is currently offered for sale on our website here.

Anglo Viking Anlaf Sihtricsson AD 941-944 Silver Penny

This issue we are delighted to highlight a rare silver penny of Anlaf Sihtricsson, struck during his first reign over Viking Northumbria (AD 941–944). Minted at York, this coins inscriptions assert Anlaf’s authority, while the cross motif echoes established Anglo- Saxon monetary traditions, signalling both continuity and conquest. Anlaf’s rule was short-lived—he was expelled in 944—yet his coins are some of the most iconic in the Anglo-Viking series. Scarce and historically resonant, this silver penny offers collectors a tangible connection to the drama and dynastic ambition of 10th-century Viking Britain.
