The Silbury Team
We are delighted to present a magnificent and historically poignant coin from Tudor England: a Gold Crown of the Double Rose struck during the reign of Henry VIII (AD 1509–1547), specifically for his first queen, Katherine of Aragon.
This coin is part of a series which Henry struck for his wives, it shows a conjoined Tudor rose dividing the crowned initials of Henry and Katherine and the motto ‘a dazzling rose without a thorn’ this type expresses both harmony and confidence. It belied a more prickly situation in reality. In 1526, the same year that these Crowns were first struck, the king’s eye had alighted on Anne Boleyn. Henry’s pursuit of Anne and attempts to divorce Katherine would change England for ever.
More than just currency, this Gold Crown is a striking testament to the interplay of power, image, and personal ambition in the Tudor court. Available now, this is a rare and evocative opportunity to own a tangible artefact from one of the most consequential chapters in English history.
Silbury Coins is proud to introduce the Scottish Borders collection, spanning over 2000 years of British history.
Beginning with the Iron age, examples of gold and silver coinage including highlights such as a rare gold stater of the Atrebatic king Epaticcus. There are around 27 staters of Epaticcus known, 13 of which are housed in the British museum. Epaticcus is most famous for expelling king Verica from Southern England with the backing of Cunobelinus prompting the Claudian Invasion in 43 A.D.
Which leads us nicely on to the Roman coins, including gold aurei of Claudius and Marcus Aurelius together with high grade silver denarii and Sestertii.
Silver and gold coins from the Anglo Saxon period feature a Crondall Shilling, several rarities from Northumbria and late pennies from rare mints such as Bridport and Dorchester.
English Medieval gold coins are well represented, then with the introduction of milled coinage we see a run of two guinea pieces followed by a proof Gothic crown of Victoria and 1937 Proof set from George VI. Careful attention has been paid to the quality of the coins, we think this shows and it has been a pleasure preparing this collection for the market!
We have recently updated to Worldpay’s latest payment gateway for Credit/Debit card payments. This features a quicker and easier checkout process, increased security and the introduction of Apple pay & Google pay options.
