This coin comes with a rough find area provenance.
An interesting coin, whether these were actually bronze cores and then gilded/plated to be passed off as gold staters is debatable given that when examples like this are found they have no sign of gilding/plating. With other ancient coins where this is the case varied amounts of the outer layer survives and is visible suggesting that these bronze Dobunnic coins were in actual fact made and circulated as bronze staters and never intended to be contemporary forgeries of the more valuable gold coinage.
