The use of this object is not precisely defined; it appears to have been used to secure the hilt of a sword in its scabbard. Various examples with this typical shape and ornamentation are recorded in England. The famous Sutton Hoo hoard contained two. The PAS database lists about a hundred examples in copper and silver, sometimes gilded, and only a dozen in solid gold.
