Julius Caesar Silver Denarius Portrait issue 44BC
18x20mm, 4.00g

Julius Caesar was the first leader to use his own portrait on the coinage, setting a precedent for the forthcoming Imperial coinage.
The obverse shows the laureate head of Caesar right, a star of eight rays behind, legend reading CAESAR IMP. The reverse depicts Venus standing left, holding Victory in right hand, with sceptre set on star in left. The legend reads P SEPVLLIVS MACER, referring to the moneyer for this issue, Sepullius Macer.

Some excellent portrait details.
