Ecclesiastical Vesica Seal Matrix Dating to the 14th Century
Seal of Coradi of Welton, Canon of St Mary's Hallington
45x28mm, 18.03g

Further Information:

My translation of the legend is:

S’ CORADI DE WELL’ CAN : SCE OMARIE HALL

CORADI is a medieval surname of possible Spanish Origin. WELL’ is possibly Welton Le Wold, a village close to Hallington in Lincolnshire but the church in the latter was that of St Lawrence so unsure why the seal references St Mary.
Hallington was mentioned in the poll tax in 1377AD, circa 70 inhabitants.

Further research is required but this is a job for the next owner as it would probably take some time!

A note on the condition of the piece, when you have the matrix in hand you can angle it against the light and the detail is much clearer than in the pictures. It is a lovely matrix with good solid metal and all detail clear.

Provenance will be provided.
