By the second century AD coinage was an established and important means of spreading the image of the emperor, some attempting to make the ruler god-like through association with attributes of the gods, others even proclaiming divinity. Throughout the period, coinage continued to be dominated by the aureus, denarius and sestertius foundation, supported by dupondius, and ‘as’.
The sestertius continued to offer a unique canvas on which to portray some particularly fine portraits and detailed reverse types. The use of the wider pantheon of gods is evident on reverse types of the time, carefully selected specifically to reflect the emperor or empress for whom the coins were struck.
