Henry VI was the infant son of Henry V when he was crowned king in AD 1422. Later crowned king of France in Notre Dame, Paris in AD 1431 he later presided over the reconquest of all of his French empire with the exception of Calais by the time the Hundred Years war ended in AD 1453. A weak but pious and learned man he founded Eton College as well as Kings College, Cambridge and All Souls , Oxford. Married to a strong willed woman, Margaret of Anjou, he became increasingly unpopular. Eventually the Dukes of York and Somerset broke and away and the civil war which broke out in AD 1455 became known as the Wars of the Roses. Defeated Henry was deposed in AD1461 and succeeded by York’s son Edward IV. Later restored briefly in AD 1471 Henry was again deposed and this time killed.

Shipwreck Treasure VOC Hollandia (Sank in Scilly Isles 1743AD)

Silver 4 Reales, Half Pillar Dollar Mexico

Philip V of Spain

AD1740

33mm, 13.11g

This coin comes with a ‘Certificate of Origin’ giving details of the wreck (see pictures).

The Hollandia, sunk in 1743 off the Scilly Isles, southwest of England.
Blown off course on her way to the East Indies, the Hollandia struck Gunner Rock and sank in about 110 feet of water 1½ miles east of the rock on July 13, 1743. There were no survivors.
The first sign of the wreck came in 1971, when divers under Rex Cowan located the wreck site and within a couple years salvaged over 35,000 silver coins among the nearly 130,000 guilders (dollar-sized units) recorded to be on board the Hollandia. A great majority of the coins were Mexican “pillar dollars,” but there were also some silver cobs, including the scarce Mexican transitional “klippes” of 1733-1734 and a few Guatemala cobs, in mixed condition.
