Iron Age

The Iron Age is split in to three main categories, most artefacts and all coins come from the Late Iron Age (2nd to 1st Century BC) and there is a wide diversity of bronze items found. Some of the items we see include brooches, clothes toggles/fasteners, mounts and equine related metal work such as terret rings and occasionally a linch pin part or cheek piece. Votive items from the Iron Age are found but not often. It is worth mention that all metal work from the Iron Age is scarce in comparison to Roman and later periods. Most items found in Britain are made of bronze, seldom do you see silver or gold artefacts from this period, I think this was all used for the extensive coinage! Often artefacts are enamelled, generally red or yellow and if these pieces are large & impressive they can fetch thousands of pounds.
